According to the French President, EU countries should not be dependent on the USA or China at critical moments. To do this, Europe must adhere to strategic autonomy.
French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Europe should not follow the foreign policy of the United States or China. He said this in an interview with the newspaper Les Echos, published on April 10, following his recent meeting with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
According to the French president, strategic autonomy is crucial so as not to turn European states into “subjects” while Europe may become a “third pole” vis-à-vis the US and China.
“Europe has not been able to establish this strategic autonomy for a very long time. Today the ideological war has been won. But now it is necessary to implement this strategy. As soon as the trap for Europe clarified its strategic position, Macron said, “We will be dragged into the disorder and crises of the world that is not ours.”
Strategic autonomy, he said, “must be Europe’s struggle.”
“We don’t want to be dependent on others for critical matters. The day when you no longer have a choice in matters such as energy, security, social media, artificial intelligence, because we no longer have the infrastructure in these matters, you will do it for a while. Leave history,” Macron said.
According to the French President, at the meeting in Beijing, Xi Jinping spoke about the European security architecture. But as Macron pointed out, there can be no European security architecture as long as there are captured countries or frozen conflicts in Europe.
In an interview with French journalists, Macron also said that Ukraine may not be “a priority for Chinese diplomacy”. However, dialogue with the PRC allows to “soften the firm comments that China is showing indifference towards Russia”.
Recall, on April 9, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he believes that negotiations on the cessation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia are now impossible, since at the moment there is an “air military”.
Earlier, on April 6, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Chinese President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The country’s leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine.
After meeting with Macron, Xi Jinping urged Ukraine and Russia to avoid escalation of the crisis, expressed China’s support for Europe’s strategic autonomy, and expressed hope for an early resumption of peace talks that would lead to a political solution.
