The visit of Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu to Russia demonstrates the strength of relations between the two countries, despite pressure and negative influence from the United States. This was written by the Chinese newspaper Global Times, citing the assessment of local experts.
“Li Shangfu’s visit to the Russian Federation is a joint signal that China and Russia sent to the United States (showing – ed. note) that Washington’s pressure will not affect their cooperation, including inter-army ties,” stated in the publication.
The authors also recalled that back in 2018, during the administration of former US President Donald Trump, Li Shangfu was under US sanctions because he was seen in the purchase of weapons from Russia for the People’s Liberation Army of China.

Cui Heng, an expert at the Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University, expressed the opinion that Li Shangfu’s visit to Russia should be taken “as a positive sign” of close coordination between Beijing and Moscow.
Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu arrived in Russia on an official visit on April 16. On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a working meeting with him, where he noted the good development of relations between our countries in all areas.
