The Russian Su-27 fighter was lifted into the air to escort two NATO patrol aircraft over the Baltic Sea, which flew towards the Russian borders. This was stated in the Russian Defense Ministry.
According to the Russian military department, on May 15, Russian radars over the Baltic Sea recorded two air targets approaching the state border of the country.
“In order to identify air targets and prevent violating the state border of the Russian Federation, a Su-27 fighter from the air defense forces of the Baltic Fleet was taken into the air,” – said the Russian Defense Ministry.
The crew of the Su-27 established these air targets. They turned out to be the R-3C “Orion” base patrol aircraft of the German Navy and the Atlantic-2 anti-submarine patrol aircraft of the French Navy.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also noted that after the NATO military aircraft turned away from the Russian state border, the Su-27 returned safely to the deployment airfield, preventing the violation of the country’s state border.
The military department stressed that the flight of the Russian Su-27 was carried out in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters without crossing airways and dangerously approaching foreign aircraft.
Earlier in Poland, they said that the Su-35 of the Russian Federation intercepted their plane over the Black Sea.
