13 people lost their lives in the flood disaster that occurred on Thursday evening, May 18, in the north of the province.
An estimated 20,000 people were left homeless due to the disaster, in which 23 rivers overflowed and 280 landslides occurred in 41 cities. Roads were closed and train services had to be cancelled.
Among the dead was an elderly couple who could not escape from their home in the village of Cave in Forlì-Cesena province.
“We heard the cries for help,” a neighbor told reporters in an interview.
An 80-year-old man drowned in his basement after a couple selling herbs died in a flood in a field across from their home. The body of a 70-year-old man was swept upstream 20 km downstream. A 76-year-old citizen died as a result of a landslide, he was in the garden of his house, a 43-year-old man fell into a well and died. He tried to pump water from his house.
Firefighters carried out 2,000 rescue operations across the flood-affected region.
The elderly were evacuated from nursing homes. Some went up to the rooftops, where they were rescued by helicopters.
Recall that during the flood in Kiev, the owner of an open Volkswagen car was fishing directly from the car.
The Kyiv City State Administration reported that the “orange” level of danger continues in Kiev and the region.
