Sunak and Biden to discuss possible appointment of Ben Wallace as NATO Secretary General, – media

The British Defense Secretary is popular in the US for his central role in building an international coalition of support for Ukraine and increasing the Kingdom’s defense spending.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will write a letter to US President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington this week to express his support for Defense Secretary Ben Wallace’s candidacy for NATO Secretary General. This was reported by The Telegraph.

The head of the British government will be in Washington for two days. Cooperation in economic, trade, science and technology will be discussed with the American leader, and billions of dollars in business investment agreements are expected to be signed in the UK. They will also discuss ways to regulate artificial intelligence.

The report said Wallace was popular in the United States because of his central role in building an international support coalition for Ukraine. It also increased UK defense spending to 2.25 percent of GDP and is pushing to reach 3 percent by the end of the decade.

Last month, Sunak spent some time on the sidelines of the last G7 meeting in Hiroshima. In Japan, he allegedly supported Wallace’s candidacy as well.

In London, they fear that the French and Germans will unite to prevent the British from this dismissal, as the newspaper notes. They seem to be able to support the first female general secretary who derailed Wallace’s victory. Matte Frederiksen, head of the Danish government, is seen as another candidate. He will meet with Biden on Monday. Politics cannot govern a country that does not devote even 2 percent of its GDP to defense and has less than 20,000 military personnel.

“I’m not sure what signal it will send to other countries about the 2 percent target,” a source from the British government quoted the publication.

Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky said at the summit in Vilnius on June 3 that he hoped to receive assurances from the NATO leadership. He believes that the Allied Powers do not plan to accept Ukraine because of fear of Russia.
