Sold for just a dollar: ‘the happiest city’ in the US filled with abandoned houses (photo)

The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street and scenes from Transformers: Dark of the Moon were shot in this town. Also, members of the Michael Jackson family were born here.

The American city of Gary, Indiana, once considered the “most miserable” place in the country, is considered so miserable that you can buy a house here for even a dollar. The Daily Star writes about it.

The town was once the industrial center of steel production in the United States, but today it can be compared to a landfill. Nicknamed the “ghost town,” Gary has lost more than 40% of its population in the past 30 years, leaving more than 30% of homes empty.

In the mid-90s, the city was also called the “murder capital” in the United States. 129 murders were recorded in one year. According to Neighborhood Scout, 4.5 out of every 1,000 people are now victims of violent crimes, and about 30 out of every 1,000 people are victims of property crimes.

Along with the high crime rate, many abandoned homes have surfaced, prompting city officials to sell some for as little as $1 in 2019. The only condition was proof that the person could fix them within one year of purchase.

As part of plans to redevelop the ruined city, its spooky abandoned buildings caught the attention of Hollywood executives who believed it was the perfect backdrop for some blockbuster movies. The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street and scenes from Transformers: Dark of the Moon were shot in this town. Also, Gary boasts that members of the Michael Jackson family who sang “2300 Jackson Street” in 1989 were born here.

In May 2021, the $300 million Hard Rock Casino opened in the city. The Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana branded casino features local The Jackson Five memorabilia and a 1,950-seat Hard Rock Live venue.

The publication notes that there is reason for optimism in Gary. The residents of the city, named after its founder, Elbert Henry Gary, say that despite its unusual name and notoriety, life is not as bleak as it is described.

“We were once the murder capital of the United States, but now there’s almost no one to kill,” one of the locals joked.

Previously Focus He wrote that the millionaire complained about expensive real estate. Kürşat Yıldırım quit his job as a crane operator and started overspending, spending over £1.3 million in the first month after winning the competition.

The abandoned mansion of the convicted millionaire was also reportedly “falling apart”. Hamilton Palace was once considered one of the most expensive private homes under construction in the UK. Work on the mansion stopped after the owner had a disagreement with the architect.
