In the United States, staff at a Washington state library were surprised to find that a book returned to the institution was 81 years old. UPI writes about it.

The Timberland District Library said library staff this week received a copy of The Bounty Trilogy by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. The card inside the cover revealed that the book was printed on March 30, 1942.

The person who returned the book explained that it had recently been found in the family vault.

The last owner had written on the inside cover, “Even if I had money, I wouldn’t read it”.

Library staff calculated that a late fee of $484 would be charged on this book, at the rate of 2 cents per day in 1942, excluding Sundays and holidays. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the library has removed late fees.

“The lesson to be learned from the story is this: If you have an overdue book collecting dust, return it to the library. We will take it back and the prize will be considered paid,” the library Facebook post wrote.
