In three years, the coronavirus has claimed the lives of at least 20 million people. In early May 2023, the World Health Organization lifted the pandemic status for Covid-19. WHO Representative in the Russian Federation Melita Vujnovic spoke with “Izvestia” on the sidelines of SPIEF 2023 and told us what the pandemic has taught us.
According to her, the world has drawn the right conclusions from what happened, and now there is a global revision of the classification of international health regulations.
“Russia, together with other countries, is participating in the revision of international health regulations, discussing the processes of joint work and coordination between countries,” she clarified.
Vujnovic noted that another lesson we learned from what happened was the realization that threats of this magnitude need to be modeled and worked out in advance. And this applies not only to health care, but also to informing the population.
“A fresh example: the other day I was asked why SPIEF still needs to do a PCR test. Because a forum of this magnitude is a super-spreader (super-distributor. – Approx. REN TV). The lessons of the pandemic show that in some countries the explosive growth of cases was recorded precisely after mass events, and yet the virus still exists.– explained the representative of WHO.
In conclusion, she drew attention to the fact that the world community has finally begun to “reach” that prevention has a positive effect on the economies of countries, because every dollar invested in prevention saves the state 35 dollars.
