The attackers said they would crash the EU banking system so that Ukraine no longer gets money to buy weapons.
Several pro-Russian hacker groups, including Killnet, Revil and Anonymous Sudan, have promised to carry out the strongest attack on European banks within 48 hours, LentaRU reported. The broadcast received exclusive information from the hackers and even a promotional video announcing the attack.
What is the hacker’s purpose?
An unknown representative of the Killnet group said in a promotional video that they wanted, above all, to overthrow the banking system that “rules the entire European Union”. He called on the entire hacker community to support the attack.
Another goal is to deprive the “Kiev regime” of funds, which will be deprived of the opportunity to buy Western weapons. “This is not a DDoS attack, the games are over. No money, no weapons, no Kiev regime,” the hacker said in the video.
This is what the Russian crackdown on cybercriminals called by analogy with “ours are intelligence officers and foreigners are spies,” promises by the “hacktivists”, nothing will save the EU banking system, and “when a blow strikes, it will be too late to change anything.”
One of the leaders of Killnet, which, according to some reports, is controlled by Russian special services and disguised under the pseudonym Killmilk, confirmed to reporters that preparations for the attack have begun and will begin in the next two days. “It will be the biggest attack ever,” he promised.
What is known about Russian hacker groups
Even the fact of uniting these ideologically disparate groups is surprising. After all, they each have different goals, but right now they’re apparently focusing on a single offensive that the West considers to be the “common enemy”.
The Killnet group among cybersecurity experts is considered a pocket project of the FSB and Russian military intelligence. This manual gained popularity after the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine when hackers attacked the resources of the international community of hackers and Anonymous activists. They spoke on the Ukrainian side and started attacking targets in Russia.
While Killnet constantly attacks the computer infrastructure of NATO countries and countries that support Ukraine, Anonymous carries out retaliatory attacks, but already has its eyes on the Russian Federation and its supporting states. Killnet is best remembered for its successful attacks on Lockheed Martin (manufacturer of HIMARS) and Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite infrastructure and FBI portal.
The Revil group is considered one of the most famous and mysterious groups in the world. These are international hackers who attack any infrastructure or company with ransomware and demand a ransom to decrypt data.
There are no limits for these cybercriminals – they attack where they can get the most benefit. The amount of ransom demanded by hackers can even reach 50 million dollars. There have been cases where companies and even government agencies have had to pay a ransom. And although the FSB claimed to have arrested the leaders of these hackers a year ago, the darknet doubts the success of this arrest.
The third group supporting the attack on EU banks is Anonymous Sudan. By demanding ransom to return stolen data or decrypt files encoded by ransomware, they often target large Swedish companies as the main target of attacks.
