A Velociraptor statue at the center of the theft led police officers to three robbers, one of whom was a minor.
In the United States, police officers were searching for a stolen Velociraptor from the South Dakota Center for the Arts and Sciences. Huffpost writes about it.
Sioux Falls Police Sergeant Aaron Benson said Friday that a security guard saw three people carrying the statue away from the Washington Pavilion and called police just after midnight. CCTV footage helped police track the thief to one of the nearby apartments.
“By opening the door, detectives were able to clearly see that the velociraptor was right inside,” Benson said.
Police teams detained three people for alleged theft. Benson said one is 18, another is 19, and a third is underage.
“Fortunately, the statue was not damaged,” Madeleine Grogan, the pavilion’s director of education, programming and exhibitions, said in an email on Friday.
The statue and many other dinosaur paintings are part of the Wild Dinosaurs exhibit at the Washington Pavilion Science Center. The organization did not provide any information about the size or weight of the statue.
Scientists believe velociraptors grew up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weighed about 100 pounds (45 kilograms) while roaming the earth millions of years ago.
