Hungarian manipulation. How did Budapest play along with Russian propaganda in the story of Ukrainian prisoners?

The surprising story of the exchange of Ukrainian POWs in Hungary raises many questions. They are put by Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets, finding the only possible logical answers.

Details on Ukrainian POWs in Hungary

Firstly, Hungary had no authority to negotiate with the Russian Federation about Ukrainian POWs without informing the Ukrainian side! And the situation regarding the transfer of 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war to Hungary by Russia causes not only surprise, but also anger.

Secondly, the only body that has the mandate to raise the issue of the release or exchange of our POWs is the Prisoners of War Coordination Headquarters.

However, Ukraine was not informed of plans to transfer Ukrainian POWs to Hungary. And there was no call from the Hungarian side that they were ready to participate in peace initiatives or to facilitate the return of Ukrainian POWs through their contacts.

Can such actions of Hungary be interpreted as a violation of international humanitarian law and a violation of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war? I think absolutely yes.

Why is Hungary doing this? I see this as an accompaniment to the alleged Russian propaganda that Ukraine does not want to take prisoners of war, which is an absolute lie. Hungarian authorities allow Russia to show that the Russians are ready to hand over prisoners of war in case of an attempt.

Yes, immediately after we learned that our prisoners of war were on Hungarian soil, we started to apply officially to the Hungarian authorities. The Ukrainian Ombudsman sent a letter to the Hungarian Ombudsman asking him to inform them about the conditions they live in and their attitudes towards them, within the limits of their jurisdiction.

I also call on the Russian Federation Commissioner for Human Rights, Tatyana Moskalkova, to examine this situation and answer sensible questions. How did it happen that 11 prisoners of war of the Ukrainian army arrived on the territory of Hungary? Why was the Ukrainian side not informed about this?

Hungary should avoid Russian Federation-style manipulative statements and be more constructive. After all, we are talking about people’s lives, their rights and freedoms being respected.

I also call on the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) to analyze and evaluate the actions of the Hungarian Ombudsman!
