What is BOLD Translate and how is it useful for Latin Americans?

There are terms and expressions in English that do not have a literal Spanish translation, especially if you are trying to capture the diversity of the Hispanic or Latino population, as is the case in the United States.

As part of its new strategy to reach this population BOLD PAC, the electoral arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), is launching the “BOLD Translate” tool. which seeks to offer more accurate translations of certain expressions or concepts into English, but mainly to provide key data on the Hispanic population.

Diana Castaneda, director of communications for this group, spoke exclusively about this, noting that action “Our struggle” is strengthened with new tools and a million dollar investment.

Castaneda indicated that the 2022 midterm elections saw the launch of the “BOLD Mensaje” campaign, a social media tool that accompanied the “Ya tú sabes” bilingual strategy.

Democrat plan for attract more Hispanic voters is to avoid “literal translation” of some concepts and expressions into English, so as not to lose the context of the message.

“Communicating with Latin American voters must recognize that they are not a monolithic population.as well as its approach to reproductive health and abortion,” the organization announced the official launch of the new platform.

The right to abortion was chosen as the first issue of the campaign, which coincided with the first anniversary of the decision of the Supreme Court on Rowe W. Wade.

“When talking about reproductive rights, it is important to remember that Hispanics belong to different socioeconomic strata, religious traditions and countries of origin,” emphasizes BOLD PAC.

Initiative highlights that Hispanics are among populations ‘disproportionately affected’ lack of access to healthcareespecially with regard to reproductive rights.

“Latinas […] they want politicians to stop dictating what to do with their bodies,” it says.

This new tool explains the basics to avoid literal translations.

For example, when it says that the Supreme Court has “overturned” the abortion manual, the literal translation is sometimes used “revoke” or “revoke”, but it should be “revoke” or “return”.

In addition to showing the best applied Spanish translation, the initiative also explains court decisions or specific government programsin addition to providing specific data on the various issues it will address, for example, this case indicates that more than 58% of Hispanics are of pregnancy age and need reproductive health plans.

The platform’s beta explained that “unemployment” is not properly translated as “work stoppage” or “unemployment”, but as “unemployment”, in addition to indicating that the US Hispanic population as of March of this year, the unemployment rate was 4.6%.

BOLD PAC will launch this platform on its social media and website ahead of the 2024 elections.
