Gotopo presents his “futuristic local style”

The Gotopo family did not like the idea of becoming an artist, despite the fact that from a very early age, this Venezuelan girl showed signs of a vocal gift and an impressive ability to learn to play musical instruments.

And because she was a tireless girl, she managed to enter the Barquisimeto Conservatory, the city she moved to when she was a girl. He left his native Caracas at the age of five, after the death of his mother. His new city hosted an intensive program on Saturdays for students who were unable to attend during the week; This was with El Sistema de Orquestas Juveniles, a program where renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic director Gustavo Dudamel was also educated.

“On Saturdays, they let us go anywhere,” Gotopo said. “The only condition was that we had to be home at 5 pm.”

And while her family thought that the girl goes to the movies or hangs out with friends, in fact the girl goes to music lessons.

Gotopo is now an aspiring artist who has been living in Berlin for a year now, a city where she says she feels at home. He recently released the EP “Sacúdete”, a six-track album produced by Kinky’s Ulises Lozano and Bomba Estereo’s Simon Mejia.

She refers to her music, a mix of folk, techno and pop, as “futuristic indigenous” because she believes her Afro-indigenous identity was erased by colonialism. And that is why the lyrics of his songs, in addition to revealing his position against machismo, patriarchy and discrimination, explore his own African and local roots through a mixture of old folk sounds and modern electronic music.

“I was looking for a spiritual and artistic reboot because I have a very eclectic relationship with music,” the translator said. “I moved from traditional music to classical music, I listened to pop rock, always between [varios] worlds. I did a lot of things with these scenes, but for the first time I found out what kind of voice I have.

To date, Gotopo has released “Cucu”, “Malembe” and “Sacúdete”. With these and the rest of his compositions, one of his goals is to blur the line between classical music and popular music.

“That’s why I moved to Berlin,” he said. “Because this place allows you to create, nurture and test without prejudice and without boundaries.”
