Rosatom’s Russian holding Uranium One Group and the Bolivian lithium company Yacimientos de Litio de Bolivia (YLB) have signed agreement on the construction of an industrial complex for the extraction and production of lithium carbonate in Potosi. This was reported in the press service of the state corporation.
“For Rosatom, this is the first large-scale foreign project in the field of lithium production, investments in which will amount to about $600 million,” – clarified Kirill Komarov, First Deputy General Director – Director of the Block for Development and International Business of the State Corporation Rosatom.
Note that Bolivia is the country with the richest reserves of lithium in the world. But lithium is widely used for the production of batteries for smartphones and electric vehicles. It is also used in electronics to create lasers and new materials.
It is planned to mine lithium in Bolivia using the Russian technology of direct sorption extraction. This method has already proven its effectiveness and environmental safety.
