“We do not expect any significant progress (in relations between the two countries) from this trip,” – said the representative of the Ministry of Finance.
“However, We look forward to constructive discussions and establishing long-term communication channels” with China, added the official.
Diplomatic and economic relations between the two powers have gradually deteriorated since the presidency of Donald Trump.
“Stabilize Relationships”
In November, President Joe Biden met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in person for the first time to try to ease tensions.
In mid-June, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken traveled to Beijing and was received by Xi Jinping. a gesture interpreted as a diplomatic move.
But during a recent campaign event in California, Biden called Xi a “dictator,” in what Beijing called a “provocation.”
The Biden administration last year imposed restrictions on the export of US semiconductors and technology components to China.
Prior to that, it upheld tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods exported from China to the United States.
“On this trip, we want to deepen and increase the frequency of communication between our countries and stabilize relations in order to avoid misunderstandings and expand our cooperation where possible,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance.
