A bleak future: Putin will defeat Prigozhin, but will not be able to overcome the rebellion, – US diplomat

According to the former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, he can no longer liquidate Prigozhin, the head of the Kremlin. This will make him a “martyr”. This cannot be allowed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not survive the military rebellion of the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin. His power was undermined and his reputation as an invincible leader badly damaged. This was expressed by Michael McFaul, the former US Ambassador to Russia, on his blog on Substack.

According to the American diplomat, despite the fact that Prigozhin and his mercenaries decided not to participate in the battle for Moscow, the Putin regime was seriously damaged.

McFaul noted that no longer the head of the Kremlin could liquidate Prigozhin. This will make him a “martyr”. This cannot be allowed. At least as long as there are many armed people loyal to Prigozhin in the Russian Federation. Therefore, Putin will wait for the right moment.

“For now, Putin will remain in power. Some even predict that the failed uprising will be a blessing in disguise for Putin, allowing him to rid his government and military of traitors,” McFaul wrote.

He also noted that Prigozhin’s revolt would enable the Kremlin chief to intensify the repression against Russian society. In the coming months or weeks, both the purges between the special services and the military, and the tightening of laws in the Russian Federation can be observed.

“In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if Prigozhin disappears from public life or suffers an even worse fate,” McFaul said. Said.

The American diplomat said that Putin will defeat Prigozhin, but the future of the Russian president in the long run is not too enviable.

“His image as an invincible leader has been badly damaged. He’s not going to get better,” McFaul said.

Recall that on July 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described Putin as weak because of the Wagner uprising. According to him, the head of the Kremlin has faced one of the most serious threats to his political power in the past two decades.

Journalists also wrote that Putin could order to blow up the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The Kremlin head is striving for quick victories, so he counts on decisions that will help change the situation at the front and affect the opinion of the Russian mass inside the Russian Federation.
