‘Look at these’: Hong Kong minister proposes to tackle smoking in an unconventional way

The minister suggested that citizens look carefully at violators, thereby showing condemnation.

Hong Kong Health Minister Lo Chung-mau has unusually invited residents to join the fight against smoking in prohibited places. This was reported by the BBC.

He showed his condemnation, inviting citizens to carefully look at violators. The ministry believes it is beneficial to hold public consultations on new strategies to combat smoking.

In his opinion, such measures are needed, since law enforcement agencies are not always able to quickly correct violations. Lo Chung-mau stressed that it is necessary to change “the culture in society so that people are ready to obey the law.”

“Tobacco-free Hong Kong has a healthy image,” he said.

The minister warned that authorities will consider CCTV footage or videos provided by the public that can be used as evidence to take action against smokers. We are talking about citizens who smoke in limited public places. Other vehicles were difficult to use because smokers often finish their cigarettes before the police arrive.

Hong Kong is preparing for new anti-tobacco measures. Current regulations prohibit smoking in restaurants, workplaces, indoor public places and some public places. It is planned that law enforcement agencies will intensify their work in this direction. Violation of current smoking regulations is punishable by fines of up to HK$1,500 ($192, £147).

Recall that in July a new anti-tobacco law came into force in Ukraine. The restrictions will affect the sale of self-flavored tobacco, electronic cigarettes and their refill liquids. Smoking of appliances with tobacco heating systems in public places will also be prohibited.
