The airline said the bear flew to Dubai, but an Iraqi Airways spokesperson said anonymously that the animal flew to Baghdad.
A bear escaped from the cargo hold of a plane arriving from Baghdad to Dubai International Airport. Sky News reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shaya Sabbar al Sudani ordered an investigation.
Iraqi Airways said it was not responsible for the bear’s escape from its cage. The airline said the bear flew from Baghdad to Dubai, but an Iraqi Airways official said the bear flew to the Iraqi capital instead.
The flight was delayed as authorities sent experts to euthanize the animal and remove it from the plane. The species of the bear was not disclosed.
A video clip circulating on social media shows the plane’s captain apologizing to passengers for delaying Friday’s departure due to the bear’s desire for freedom.
Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international flights, declined to comment.
In Iraq, especially in Baghdad, keeping carnivores as pets has become popular among the wealthy.
Baghdad police have previously urged citizens to report such cases and assist authorities in preventing such animals from being released onto city streets or entering restaurants as exotic dishes.
Recall that on August 4, frightened passengers of Iraqi Airways Flight 123 had to be evacuated after the bear in the animal compartment escaped from the cage.
It was also reported that a large grizzly bear attacked a group of tourists in Alaska.
