Fires in Canada: images showing the development of a fire in the province of British Columbia, where a state of emergency has been declared

Authorities in the western Canadian province of British Columbia have ordered the evacuation of about 15,000 homes where firefighters are fighting wildfires in the area.

A “significant” number of buildings were reported to have caught fire in West Kelowna, a city of 36,000 people, and more than 2,400 homes were evacuated.

A state of emergency has been declared across the province, with hundreds of individual fires burning.

Canada is experiencing an unprecedented wildfire season, with more than 13.7 million hectares already burned, according to official estimates.
