Emma Coronel is released from prison, but she will not have absolute freedom. What’s next for her?

Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is released from prison on September 13, 2023.according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP).

This is the second round of her prison sentence after she was transferred last May to a community center of sorts in California where supervision is less stringent.

The third step in Coronel’s sentence, handed down on November 30, 2021 by Judge Rudolph Contreras of Washington, D.C., requires him to complete several additional steps with the officer in charge upon his release from prison.

First, El Chapo’s wife must allow the officer in charge to collect her DNAto track your next steps.

Except You must live only in approved housing and find work.where he must work at least 30 hours a week, according to 13 rules in a court document seen by this newspaper.

Coronel became the subject of Justice Department interest on February 23, 2019, when his twins’ godfather, Damaso “El Lic” Nunez Nunez, told El Chapo’s trial that a companion of his helped carry out a plan for her husband to leave Mexico’s Altiplano prison through a tunnel. in 2015.

The charge against her was for collaborating with a foreign leader of a criminal organization, as Coronel is a dual citizen, allowing the United States to more easily process her under its laws.

One day after the verdict Jeffrey Lichtman, Coronel’s lawyer, confirmed to the newspaper that Coronel will not be in prison until September.but in May she will be transferred to a community center that allows home confinement, like the Long Beach RRM where she was sent.

Leachman then added that inmates must serve 85 percent of their sentence, meaning Coronel is scheduled to be released in May 2023, having served 30.6 of the 36 months (three years) of his sentence and taking into account the time he spent in prison after being sent to prison in Alexandria, Virginia.

“The 36-month sentence means he must serve 30.6 months,” he said. “This does not reflect the time spent in confinement at home… the last 10%. So he will be released from prison sometime in May 2023.”

Coronel was arrested on February 22, 2021, at Dulles International Airport.but he did not appear in court because he reached an agreement with prosecutors, who assured that there was no obligation to cooperate in other cases.

Given the conditions of his parole, Coronel may remain in California.
