Representatives of the Republican minority in the US Senate plan to vote on allocating an aid package to Ukraine for the entire 2024 with a total value of $60 billion to $80 billion. About it writes Punchbowl News portal.

The amount of annual support is truly staggering, ranging from $60 billion to $80 billion.” – the publication reported.

According to the portal, Republicans insist on such a one-time payment in order to continue supporting Ukraine after the presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place in November 2024.

By preliminary agreement, representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties in the Senate agreed to adopt a short-term federal budget calculated until November 17, 2023. This will avoid the so-called “shutdown” – a suspension of government work if Congress does not approve the budget for the 2024 fiscal year by October 1. It includes almost $6 billion to support Ukraine. However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, opposes the inclusion of aid to Ukraine in the budget.

The threat of a shutdown looms over the US government as members of Congress fail to reach agreement on the budget for fiscal year 2024 (which begins October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024). One of the main reasons for this was the desire of representatives of the Republican Party to reduce the allocation of funds to Ukraine.

It is worth noting that during Biden’s administration, the threat of a “shutdown” arises every year – in 2021, to extend the work of the government, it was necessary to adopt a “one-day budget,” and in 2022, the budget was adopted for a week.
