Streets, cars and houses in Russia’s Far Eastern city were flooded. The wind damaged power lines. Photos taken from the scene show a trolleybus with water splashing under the feet of passengers.

On the night of October 5-6, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in the Russian Federation experienced heavy rain following the typhoon that devastated the Russian Far Eastern island of Sakhalin. Due to heavy rainfall, the streets of the village were flooded. In some places, the water level reached one and a half meters, “rivers” flowed through the streets, trees fell, cars and apartments on the ground floor were flooded. Russian media and local public pages wrote about the consequences of events in Russia.

According to reports from residents of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the level is so high that it is impossible to escape in vehicles – the flow floods the bodywork. While the streets were flooded due to the wind, trees were also blown down. Many areas of the settlement were left without electricity.

Flood in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: details

At 01:00, the governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko, published a message about the first consequences of bad weather conditions. He stated that especially the power lines were broken, so six apartment buildings and 500 private houses were left without electricity. The estimated number of people affected by this situation is 2,600 people.

The mayor of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sergei Nasadin, announced the declaration of a state of emergency at 4:00 in the morning. According to the Russian official, he was aware that 20 houses were flooded.

The Civil Protection and Emergency Management Agency warned that water levels were expected to rise by another 0.5-1.5 metres.

Weather portals state that winds of up to 18 m/s are expected on Sakhalin Island on October 6 and the air temperature is 9-15 degrees. Rain also continues – 1.99-2 mm of precipitation. Meanwhile, the typhoon passed the Russian island and moved towards the Japanese island of Hokaido.
