US warns 100 countries: Russia will discredit fair elections worldwide – Reuters

Journalists say Russia’s success in spreading disinformation about the 2020 US elections and the Covid-19 pandemic has prompted the Kremlin to continue such operations.

US intelligence concluded that Russia used spies, state media and social media to undermine people’s faith in fair and democratic elections around the world. The US alert was sent to 100 countries. Reuters writes about it.

According to journalists, this is a global phenomenon.

“Our information suggests that senior Russian government officials, including the Kremlin, view such influence operations as valuable and believe them to be effective,” the report said.

Russia’s success in spreading disinformation about the 2020 US elections and the Covid-19 pandemic has prompted the Kremlin to step up operations to influence elections in other countries, an unnamed senior US State Department official said.

“Success multiplies further, and we certainly see the US election as a catalyst,” the official said.

It was reported that Washington also informed the governments of all countries that received the warning. In the US, they believe the Kremlin wants to “sow instability” in democratic countries by making elections dysfunctional and governments illegitimate.

Moreover, as stated in the broadcast, Washington admits that it is vulnerable to this threat. The report states that the Russian Federation uses both overt and covert mechanisms. The Kremlin has networks of influence and proxies controlled by its intelligence services.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) is secretly working to intimidate election officials, organize election day protests and “sabotage voting abroad” in the 2020 elections in an unnamed country in Europe, the source said.

Let’s remember, on October 12, there were reports in the media that Russian taxi service Yango might leak FSB data. According to journalists, an investigation by the authorities showed that personal data collected by the Yango taxi service was transferred to the Russian Federation.
