US Department of Defense spokesman John Plumb said the B61-13 will be delivered using modern aircraft that will strengthen deterrence against enemies and provide confidence to allies.
The United States will begin developing a new, modern version of the B61-13 gravity nuclear bomb. This is stated on the Pentagon’s website.
It was reported that the decision was made in cooperation with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Meets the demands of the rapidly changing security environment.
As Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb said, threats to the United States from potential adversaries are increasing.
“The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and deploy the capabilities needed to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks,” he said.
The statement stated that the B61-13 will be delivered using advanced aircraft, increasing deterrence against enemies and providing peace of mind to the United States’ allies and partners. The new weapon will replace some B61-7s in existing nuclear arsenals and will have a similar yield to the B61-7, higher than the B61-12.
“B61-13 represents a smart step to meet the challenges of a highly dynamic security environment,” Plumb said.
On the other hand, as the official stated, the production of B61-13 will not increase the total number of weapons in the US nuclear arsenal. The new bomb will take advantage of existing production capabilities.
What is B61
The B61 is a thermonuclear bomb that is the primary weapon of the US strategic nuclear force and was first developed in the 1960s. In 2015, the United States tested the 12th newest guided modification of the aerial bomb without a warhead.
Let’s remember, on October 23, the Main Intelligence Directorate announced whether Putin would use nuclear weapons. The Russian Federation used every weapon it could. GUR believes that the world will not just watch as Russia attempts to turn nuclear weapons into a real threat.
