Scientists have found out what “the most terrible sound in the world” sounds like.

Thanks to modern technology, experts were able to recreate the noise of the Aztec death whistle. They 3D printed the ominous instrument.

According to the Daily Mail, such whistles produce something between an eerie whistling gust of wind and the “cry of a thousand dead men.” It is believed that the Aztecs used them in ritual ceremonies in honor of the god of the winds, Eecatl.

The original Aztec death whistle was found in 1999 during excavations in Mexico City – it was in the hands of a headless skeleton. Interestingly, scientists were not particularly interested in the find until 15 years later when they decided to blow into the hole. The whistle made a frightening sound.

What other incredible facts can you tell about sound and technologies related to it? Which fish are the loudest creatures on the planet? How are they trying to shout to the moon in Britain? Why does the blue whale “sing”? How to distinguish truth from lies by sound? Details about this and much more are in the “Science and Technology” program with host Mikhail Borzenkov. The scientific blockbuster will be released on Sunday, October 29, at 10:30 on REN TV.
