Children in exchange for freedom: A new initiative is proposed for detained women in Russia

Russian MP Valery Seleznev proposes solving the demographic crisis in Russia with the help of detained women. He also said that “salvation” for such women would be the creation of families with “veterans and disabled people of the Northern Military District.”

Lawmakers in Russia are offering to release detained women in exchange for giving birth to children. This initiative was proposed by Valery Seleznev, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

According to him, there are nearly 45 thousand women in Russian prisons, and most of them are detained for “light” crimes. According to the MP, such women could be released early in exchange for childbearing.

“Many of these women are capable of childbearing. The state can also offer them an agreement in which the woman’s sentence is reduced; if she gives birth during such ‘leave’, the rest of the sentence will be canceled,” the MP said.

Thus, they propose to solve the demographic, social and humanitarian problem in Russia. It is worth noting that Russian State Duma deputy Valery Seleznev called childbearing the “highest” way of correction for detained women. He made an analogy to the release of detainees, especially those who will fight against Ukraine.

“Why do we deprive women of the opportunity to atone for their crimes? We do not need women to give their lives to the SIO. But we urgently need to solve the fundamental problem of the future of the undoubtedly winning country. The SIO risks falling into a demographic gap that threatens its existence,” the MP wrote.

She also noted that such women who have experienced “the complexities of life” can make wonderful mothers. The deputy added that “the same atonement worthy of early pardon” for them would be the creation of families with “veterans and disabled people of the Northern Military District.”

According to Newsweek, the neighboring state may take such steps due to the high death rate and low birth rate in the country.

It was noted that a series of measures were announced in the Russian Federation at the beginning of 2020, aiming to increase the birth rate to 1.7 children per woman within four years.

However, in 2021, the birth rate in Russia dropped to 1.49 children per woman; This is the lowest figure in the last 10 years, according to the publication. It is stated that the war, in which 300 thousand soldiers participated alone, also affected anxiety.

Let us recall that recently a Russian activist in Kazan was accused of rehabilitating Nazism for a poster that read “The 9th Way”. In fact, according to the review, such posters create negative stereotypes about representatives of the “Red Army”.
