The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with Izvestia, responded to the accusations of the Moldovan government about the alleged interference of the Russian Federation in the elections in the country.
“It’s funny to hear about interference in the elections of Moldova from the President of Moldova, who has Romanian citizenship. Sandu cannot do more than pursue alien interests in Moldova.”she said.
Previous edition Der Spiegel reported that the pro-European Moldovan government accused Russia of using about $5 million to influence the elections. Allegedly, in this way Moscow wanted to return pro-Russian figures to power. Maia Sandu also claimed that Russia paid certain groups to buy votes.
Let us remind you that on October 19, the second round of local elections started in Moldova. The first one took place on November 5th. Now the citizens of the country choose those who will lead the settlements and form district councils. These elections precede the presidential elections in 2024 and are a kind of barometer of political sentiment in the state.
