The United States is trying to legitimize the actions of the so-called coalition in the Red Sea with the help of its resolution. This was stated by the Russian permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

They put together a so-called international coalition, consisting mainly of US ships, which supposedly should ensure security“, he noted during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

According to him, in fact, the legitimacy of the actions of this coalition raises questions from the point of view of international law.

Nebenzya said that Russia calls on the United States and Great Britain to refrain from a free interpretation of the right to protect their ships.

As he noted, the vote of these two countries against the Russian amendments shows that they have exposed themselves.

Earlier it became known that the Security Council did not accept Russia’s amendments to the draft resolution of the United States and Japan condemning the Houthi attacks. As Nebenzya noted, this is a politicized resolution with the help of which Washington wants to legitimize the actions of its coalition in the Red Sea.

On December 19, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin announced the launch of the Guardian of Prosperity operation to protect the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from attacks by the Houthis. He noted that, in addition to the States, six countries will participate in the operation. The Houthis then said the US should bear responsibility for the escalation in the Red Sea.

On January 2, it was reported that the Houthis launched two cruise missiles at a US warship in the Red Sea. According to Sky News Arabia, on the night of January 2, “violent clashes” broke out between a US ship and Houthi boats. On the morning of January 3, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the Houthis fired two missiles towards the Red Sea, but not a single ship was damaged.

A member of the political council of the Ansar Allah movement, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, said that any state that joins the international coalition formed under the auspices of the United States to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea will fall “under the radar of missiles.”
