The United States could influence Turkey’s decision to ratify Sweden’s application to join NATO. This statement was made by retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel, international consultant and political scientist Earl Rasmussen in an interview with REN TV.

“The United States was involved in this. I think Turkey will get the 16 fighters that it wanted. Probably, against the political background, there was some kind of quid pro quo (service for favor. – Approx. REN TV) to allow Turkey to move towards a positive solution regarding Sweden. Will tension between them continue? Undoubtedly”he said.

The expert explained that some leaders of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party live in Sweden. They are considered a terrorist group, carry out related activities in Turkey and are wanted. Given these facts, it can be assumed that in exchange for ratifying Sweden’s application, the Turkish authorities will receive some weapons.

“President Erdogan cares about what’s best for Turkey. And so I’m sure there will be some compromises in addition to what we’ve already talked about. Perhaps some restrictions on immigration to a certain extent, other military compromises on systems weapons or access to technology, reducing any restrictions on the part of the United States towards Turkey. Perhaps they will receive something from the EU or NATO in the form of a bonus.”Rasmussen added.

In addition, the political scientist noted that he does not consider the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO as a way to increase the security of the alliance, but on the contrary. However, this may turn out to be a political game, so it is possible that Turkey could become part of the European Union, which it has been waiting for more than 20 years.

“I believe that, first of all, the United States exerted strong pressure or influence to force Turkey to accept this side and approve of it. I am sure that Stoltenberg also took part in this. But in essence, NATO is just an extension of the United States, without the United States NATO is nothing. And therefore I am sure that the United States was very involved in the process of influencing the final decision of the Turkish side,” – concluded the channel’s interlocutor.
