Lavrov called for an investigation into UNRWA’s accusations of involvement in Hamas attacks

It is necessary to understand the accusations coming from Israel towards employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) of involvement in the Hamas attack. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference after negotiations with Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara.

Lavrov called it wrong to replace the investigation with collective punishment.

“If such accusations exist, they need to be looked into. <…> What happened and is happening is collective punishment prohibited by international humanitarian law.” – said the Russian minister.

Lavrov added that if the investigation takes place, the facts will become known.

Let us remind you that it became known earlier that the authorities of Finland, Germany and Great Britain decided to suspend funding for UNRWA after the Israeli authorities accused its employees of aiding Hamas.

Germany noted the important role of UNRWA in supplying Gaza civilians and welcomed the agency’s response to the accusations and the removal of some employees.
