Russia calls on the International Court of Justice to give a proper legal assessment of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported this. The statement came amid hearings regarding the legal consequences of Israeli actions in the occupied territory.

Israel’s construction of new settlements in the West Bank is becoming one of the key manifestations of the ongoing occupation, representatives of the Russian department indicated in a statement. They noted that the pace of construction being carried out by Israel is record-breaking. In addition, construction is proceeding despite the fact that the Security Council and the UN General Assembly have declared it illegal.

“The Russian side calls on the court to give a proper legal assessment of this tragic situation”– indicated in a statement by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on website departments.

The ministry also added that states and international organizations should contribute to resolving this conflict. At the same time, the Foreign Ministry noted that the obligations to resume negotiations lie with Palestine and Israel.

Negotiations must ensure the creation of an independent Palestinian state that will coexist in peace and security with Israel, diplomats concluded.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that Russia seeks to help Israel and Palestine come to an agreement, since there is no other way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East. The Russian minister, at a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, drew attention to the enormous sacrifices made by the residents of the Gaza Strip. As Lavrov noted, these are “huge numbers for this region.”
