With the onset of frost, the operation of electric vehicles becomes more complex. The maximum range is significantly reduced and charging may take longer. Recurrent experts conducted a study to find out how often you need to charge your electric car in winter.

Most EV drivers pay more attention to range and charging method in winter. They charge their cars more often to increase the maximum mileage.

The experts analyzed 35,000 charge readings from 521 Ford Mustang Mach-E drives and 65,000 charge readings from 486 VW ID. The data showed that drivers charge their electric vehicles much more often in cold weather.

Experts also interviewed more than 10,000 electric car drivers to find out how they adapt to winter. They noted that with the onset of frost, electric cars drive much less than the declared range.

On average, the range reduction in winter is 30% compared to other seasons. Generally, if an electric car can travel about 480 km, it will exceed about 338 km in cold weather.

60% of drivers said they charge their vehicles at a higher charge level in cold weather. For example, some expect batteries to charge up to 85% instead of 78%.

Many drivers emphasized that they prefer to charge their electric vehicles at home in the winter. They leave their cars on charge all night so that the battery reaches 100% in the morning.
