The hydrogen truck is being developed with scientists from Oregon State University. Another $25.8 million was allocated for the project.
Daimler Truck North America is working with scientists at Oregon State University to develop a heavy-duty electric truck. Details of the new model from the cargo section of Mercedes-Benz were explained on the electric website.
The truck will be produced under the Freightliner brand – this brand belongs to Mercedes. The battery will be replaced by an advanced electrical installation with hydrogen fuel cells and an energy management system. This will achieve a range of about 965 kilometers, which is even more than its main competitor, the Tesla Semi.
The development team aims to increase the life of the fuel cells to 25,000 hours. While the technical specifications of the project remain secret.
Oregon State University said the early stages of the project will include process modeling, analysis, concept selection and design. In later stages, the hydrogen truck will be tested on the road.
In 2021, the US Department of Energy pledged a $25.8 million grant to Daimler Truck North America for the project. The money will be allocated as part of the SuperTruck 3 program.
“Daimler’s aim is to develop technologies that will demonstrate an innovative hydrogen fuel cell electric tractor that exceeds the performance, efficiency and range requirements of heavy-duty long-haul tractors without sacrificing payload,” the company said.
