Ursula von der Leyen believes that European countries should consider Ukraine’s defense capabilities as part of their own defense capabilities.
Ukraine’s defense industrial complex (DIC) will be integrated into the European Union’s defense industry. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the plenary meeting of the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 6, Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.
“Looking to the future, we must consider Ukraine’s defense capabilities as a component of our defense capability. We must consider Ukraine’s defense industry as a component of our own defense industry, and that is why we included Ukraine in the preparation of our project. We have our own defense industrial strategy.” said the president.
According to von der Leyen, this is the first step that will facilitate Ukraine’s integration into certain defense programs with the approval of the European Parliament and the European Council. The EU chief added that this would not only help meet Ukraine’s defense needs, but would also “promote rapprochement and joint planning between our weapons and defense industries.”

In addition, von der Leyen reminded that more than 40 thousand Ukrainian military personnel were trained in the European Union, and that EU member states mobilized military equipment to supply 28 billion euros to Ukraine.
“The European defense industry has increased its ammunition production capacity by 40 percent. We will deliver more than half a million artillery shells by next month and over 1 million by the end of the year, but this is of course not enough,” admitted the President of the European Commission.
