Writers don’t like Sapkowski: why the Witcher prequel failed

The prequel to the hit series The Witcher failed miserably. And it’s not even that in the new story there was no place for the Hollywood star Henry Cavill. The script itself is called a failure. And the rating based on the results of the release of the first episodes finally broke all the expectations of the film crew.

What exactly the critics did not like was found out by our film reviewer Nikolai Nikulin. Details – in the material REN TV.

What disappointed viewers write

The Witcher: Origins, the prequel to the popular franchise, has disappointed viewers. On the review site Rotten Tomatoes, which publishes audience ratings, the series received only 8 points out of 100. And on another review site, imdb.com, it was blown to smithereens:

“Honestly, very, very few people like the show. The plot is trite, as are the characters. The dialogue is terrible, things happen randomly without explanation.”

“Anyone who loves The Witcher even a little will no doubt be incredibly saddened and discouraged when they see this parody. It’s clumsy, cheaply made and uninteresting. Utterly awful and disrespectful.”

Twitter is also full of negativity:

“You can criticize a show because of the story, the CGI, the quality of the script/acting/direction, etc. (or lack thereof) and say that ‘diversity’ is a problem. No, the problem is that it’s terrible.”

“Netflix should fire everyone involved in writing the script and cancel further spin-offs. What a joke they have turned this beloved franchise into.”

Screenwriter’s Excuses for Harsh Criticism

The Witcher screenwriter Lauren Hissrick even had to make excuses on her page on the social network. To comment: “Busy bullying our favorite books? You should consider another profession.”she answered:

“I really like my work. But it’s a pity that you didn’t like what we have already done! If you watch the third season, I think you will be amazed at how we follow the content of the book.”

What are the other weaknesses in the new project

The Witcher is based on fantasy books by Andrzej Sapkowski. At least the first two seasons with Henry Cawvil. What can not be said about the fresh prequel, where the action takes place 1200 years before the events of the original show. And this plot is based on nothing: none of the plots of the book, nor the famous video game of the same name.

Apparently, it seems to the creators that it is enough to show the gloomy medieval realities – after all, the viewer loves them so much, and success will be like that of the Game of Thrones. But here’s a surprise: it turns out that you need to compose a good story.

“The film itself is just terrible. It’s just like low-budget sci-fi. Very poor, I just cried over these special effects,” said film reviewer Riad Mehlia.

“Oh my god. I’ve never…never in my entire life….never seen such low marks. How did they manage to get such low marks? It’s unbelievable!” – shared critic and YouTuber Tyrone Magnus.

Screenwriters don’t like Sapkowski?

By the way, the former co-producer of The Witcher, Bo DeMaio, honestly admitted that the screenwriters did not really like Sapkowski’s books and did not play video games based on The Witcher. What then to take from them? And when Henry Cavill left the project, everything became completely scary.

“Yes, we will be fine without him, – joked Bethy Joey, the performer of the role of Buttercup in The Witcher. – No. To be honest, it was very sad. He will be greatly missed.”

“Of course, I would like to work with The Witchers more, but it all depends on how much the story allows,” – Henry Cavill shared.

Apparently history won’t allow it. The writers have gone astray. And the audience lost confidence in the creators of the project. One of the most popular movie franchises has been frankly disgraced.
