Gere was born on May 7, 1922 in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania, a small dairy town in the Endless Mountains south of Binghamton. The third of five children born to Albert and Hazel Snover Gere, he graduated from Brooklyn Vocational High School and enlisted in the US Navy early World War II, serving in the Pacific on the USS Aristaeus.
