Gere was born on May 7, 1922 in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania, a small dairy town in the Endless Mountains south of Binghamton. The third of five children born to Albert and Hazel Snover Gere, he graduated from Brooklyn Vocational High School and enlisted in the US Navy early World War II, serving in the Pacific on the USS Aristaeus. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania under the G.I. Rights Act. His first post-college job was as an accountant for the Atlantic Refining Company in Philadelphia.

After moving to an office in Syracuse in 1950, Gere gradually developed a side business as an insurance salesman for Nationwide, following in the footsteps of his brother Howard. The four Gere brothers worked for Nationwide at one time or another. When he left Nationwide, Homer Gere was one of the company’s most famous and beloved agents.

He achieved all this in cooperation with his wife, Doris Tiffany Gere, hails from the same small town in Pennsylvania. They met in elementary school and married in 1945. Doris Gere died in 2016. Over 70 years of marriage, they raised five children: Susan, Richard, Joanne, David and Laura..

They were especially associated with Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, where they sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Homer Gere was a member of the Career Education Advisory Board of the North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education, which began the district’s vocational education program in 1989.

After leaving Nationwide, Gere worked as a driver and fundraiser for Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. In his 80s, he delivered food from the trunk of his hatchback. He also wrote grants for the organization and appeared in its print and television advertisements.
