Amazon created a new artificial general intelligence (AGI) team just four months ago, but the team is already undergoing restructuring.
The AGI team, led by Amazon’s head scientist and senior vice president Rohit Prasad, was divided into six major areas, with a focus on the smart speaker Alexa, according to an internal email obtained by Business Insider. Part of the project will be delegated to the device team.
In an email dated Nov. 20, Presado said the changes “will help sharpen our focus on this mission and accelerate delivery to our customers.” “We’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished with Alexa and AGI over the years.”

Business Insider reached out to an Amazon spokesperson for comment, but did not receive a response.
As previously reported by Business Insider, Amazon’s AGI team was formed in July 2023 with the goal of building the “most ambitious” large-scale language model. At the time, Presado was selected to report directly to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
Although there is no set definition for AGI, it generally means building machines with intelligence equal to or greater than that of humans. AGI is different from generative AI, which learns patterns using existing similar items such as fiction, emails, websites, and art, and generates new output.
In the email, Presado reiterated that the AGI team’s overarching mission is to “build the world’s best general purpose intelligence service that benefits all of Amazon’s businesses and humanity.”
Notably, unlike OpenAI, this mission explicitly includes “benefiting all of Amazon’s businesses” before “humanity.”
The changes follow recent AGI team layoffs reported by Business Insider. The layoffs were part of a wave of layoffs primarily targeting Amazon’s Alexa team.
The new team structure covers six new areas of focus for the AGI division. This provides a glimpse into how Amazon plans to compete more directly with rivals Microsoft and Google in AI. Plans are also laid out for Amazon to build its own base model, AGI conversational assistant, and related infrastructure services.
Meanwhile, teams that have been working on feature development focused on Alexa, such as Alexa ads, personalities, and routines, will be placed under the device team.
According to an internal email, the six newly formed teams within the AGI division are:
- AGI products: Define AGI’s services and collaborate with internal customer teams to achieve end-to-end success.
- AGI data service: Build services to store, access, and manually label data to train basic and professional Al models with world-class privacy and security for end users.
- AGI basic model: Developing the best basic model (FM) that can perform any task in a safe and secure manner in any modality. These models are used by internal and external users across Amazon’s businesses.
- AGI perception/machine learning builder service: Build specialized models and services like speech recognition, text-to-speech, and computer vision to power applications like Alexa, Amazon Search, Fire TV, and AWS Polly.
- AGI conversational assistant service: General purpose and specialized conversational assistants/agents that leverage thousands of services and devices with situational context to respond to user requests and act proactively on the user’s behalf. Develop services to build.
- AGI information:Build an infrastructure to capture and organize the world’s knowledge and real-time information to train models, as well as create an experience to access and manipulate any information on any endpoint. construction.
