Diego Cocca will step down as Atlas coach after the conclusion of the 2022 opening tournament. Liga MX, the board of the club from Guadalajara announced.
Kokka, who won the final tournament of 2022 and the opening tournament of 2021, said goodbye and said it was time to step aside so that other people could take over the project to move the team forward.
“This is a difficult moment, with conflicting parts of this project, in which we put everything that needs change, and it is we who step aside so that the project continues to grow.it was with a sports project, we achieved it, we want to continue in this place, since I came, I was a player, and this club gave me a lot, and I also wanted to give it something in that sense.
Jose Riestra, president of Atlas, thanked Kokka and recalled that the Argentine coach not only saved them from relegation upon arrival, but also became a two-time champion.
“This is a moment of mixed feelings, everything in this life has a cycle and has an end, I remember a little over two years ago when the institution was going through a very difficult moment, when we were analyzing who should take over, who would save us from relegation and we will meet Diego and his coaching staff and I set ourselves the goal of transforming this institution and went down the path with two league titles.
Cocca became only the third coach to win the championship twice and brought joy back to Atlas fans after more than 70 years of drought in Mexican football.
In 95 games as Atlas manager, Kokka recorded 34 wins, 25 draws and 36 losses. Although his best result will be a two-time Mexican football championship.. This season, Atlas could not stand it and is in seventeenth position with only 10 points in 16 matches and 4 defeats in the last 5 games.
“Diego, I have nothing but gratitude for putting us on the line. and Alejandro told you in the following days that we would meet again and work together so that you would leave this for the rest of our history,” Riestra said.
