The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) believes that the decision to remove Russian athletes from international competitions should be extended for four years, contrary to the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
In December 2019, WADA declared the Russian Anti-Doping Agency invalid, and all athletes from the Russian Federation were suspended from participating in international competitions under the Russian flag for four years. In December 2020, RUSADA, through CAS, achieved a reduction in the period of restrictions to two years – until December 17, 2022. There are no provisions in the WADA regulation under which a sentence can be extended.
“The CAS decision is clear and self-explanatory. The CAS sanctions will automatically expire on December 17. There is nothing in the rules to allow WADA to extend those effects beyond that date. We remain disappointed that CAS did not approve our proposed set of sanctions, which provided for a four-year suspension, WADA said.
Nevertheless, the agency admitted that they were forced to comply with the decision of the arbitration court.
At the same time, it is noted that RUSADA is a “separate process” that only “begins” from December 17.
“At this point, WADA management will initiate a comprehensive review to assess whether RUSADA has complied with all the conditions for reinstatement set out in the CAS decision. Once WADA management considers that all conditions have been met, it will refer the matter to the Independent Compliance Committee (CRC) for consideration. If the CRC agrees, it will make a recommendation to the WADA Executive Board.” added to the agency.
On November 14, WADA demanded that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ban Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years for allegedly violating anti-doping rules. In addition, WADA demands to cancel the results of the athlete at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where Valieva won the gold medal in the figure skating team tournament.
