Russia will be deprived of Olympic medal: CAS disqualified figure skater Valieva for four years

The disqualification put an end to the long-running dispute between representatives of the Russian skater and anti-doping organizations. The story began on December 25, 2021, when Valieva failed a doping test at the Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, disqualified 17-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years. CAS stated that the athlete violated anti-doping rules. CNN writes about it.

The disqualification put an end to the long-standing dispute between representatives of the Russian Federation and anti-doping organizations. The CAS decision means that the gold medal won by the Russian team in figure skating at the 2022 Olympics will be withdrawn.

The story dates back to December 25, 2021, when Valieva failed a doping test after one of her performances at the Beijing Olympics. A doping test after the team figure skating competition showed that 15-year-old Valieva had trimetazidine, a heart drug that can also increase endurance, in her body.

In a statement released on Monday, January 29, CAS said the disqualification applies to all competition results achieved by Valieva since the positive test.

In Beijing, the Russian team represented by Valieva (the team was called the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) due to anti-doping sanctions) took first place, ahead of the USA, Japan and Canada. However, medals were not awarded. Doping-related disputes

In their statement, CAS representatives noted that it is not possible to decide what the Beijing 2022 final ranking will be and whether medals will be awarded. CAS also said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had jurisdiction over the results.

Results regarding disqualification, starting from previous competitions; CAS said the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics were not within the scope of this arbitration procedure and should be handled by the relevant sports bodies.

In December 2022, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) commission noted that Valieva was innocent and that there was no negligence on her part. The skater also stated that the drug accidentally entered the body.

However, RUSADA’s decision was appealed by the IOC and the International Skating Union (ISU). RUSADA later changed its original stance, requesting a sentence for Valieva that “may be limited to reprimand.”

CAS said in a statement on Monday that the decision was “final and binding”. However, the parties can appeal to the Swiss Federal Court within 30 days, citing various reasons.

Let’s remember, in February 2022, the USA explained why Kamila Valieva was doping. Valieva’s representatives may attempt to increase endurance and improve athletic performance through medications, according to leaders of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

It was also reported that there is a version that the “grandfather medicine” got into the body by accident.
