Swarms of drones can “break” deep defense: what threatens the military of Russia and China

The Pentagon aims to control thousands of unmanned aerial vehicles with a “smart” system that can operate in areas where there is no connection.

The US Department of Defense wants a system that would allow swarms of drones to enter protected areas. This was known to the Defense Post.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the US Department of Defense has requested proposals from developers for a drone swarm control system that will operate in conditions of blocking access or enemy restricted areas (Access Denial / Area Blocking). This is a military strategy to control access to the operational environment, which includes the use of various measures to prevent the entry of opposing forces.

The Pentagon plans to adopt autonomous multitasking adaptive swarms (AMASS) made up of thousands of unmanned aerial vehicles (AMASS) under the control of an “intelligent” system. The US military hopes that such technology will help them “break through” the deep defense of the enemy, but for this drones must work without constant communication, which can be “jammed” by electronic warfare.

“AMASS will consider the needs of potential future missions when selecting swarms and swarm compositions,” DARPA said. Said.

As The Defense Post explains, the United States and its allies can now “pierce” protected areas with long-range precision weapons, but such systems are very expensive and few in number and require precise target coordinates. There are other options such as submarines to enter enemy territory, but in this case they are at risk with the crew. Drones should be a cheap and safe alternative.

Earlier, they wrote that the US military is testing artificial intelligence technology to control swarms of drones. Tests are being conducted at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

In September, the US Army deployed its largest swarm of drones to bombard targets during an exercise in California. It combined 40 quadcopters with cameras, laser sensors and dropped ammo.
