For the car market of the European Unionmonth February 2023 ended with 11.5% growth. This is 802,763 registrations, compared to 719,783 in 2022, according to the association of European car manufacturers ACEA. If we also want to include the UK and the EFTA countries, there were 902,775 car registrations in February 2023, up from 804,414 last year, equaling a 12.2% increase.

All major markets of the European Union ended February with growth. In particular, Spain and Italy performed very well with growth of 19.2% and 17.4% respectively. Market volumes, however, are still far from 2019period before the start of the pandemic. In fact, in February 2019, EU (including UK) + EFTA countries reached 1,114,692 registrations.


In the first two months of 2023, there were 1,563,015 registrations in the European Union automotive market, which is 11.4% more than in 2022. Looking at the four main EU markets, Spain (+32.1%) and Italy (+18.2%) recorded the largest gains, followed by France (+9.1%). In two months, the number of registered cars in Germany grew by only 0.2%. Including the UK and EFTA countries, there were 1,814,048 registrations in the first two months of 2023, representing an increase of 11.5%.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES GROW

Electric cars are going very well in February 2023. In particular, new registrations of BEVs in the EU increased by 39.7%, reaching 97,300 vehicles, with a market share of 12.1% (9.7% in February 2022).

With the exception of the Czech Republic (-3.2%) and Slovakia (-28.2%), all EU markets contributed to this growth. For example, Germany (+14.7%), France (+45.7%) and the Netherlands (+88.9%). Instead, registration plug-in hybrid vehicles in the EU they fell by 7.4% to 57,569 vehicles sold. This decrease is mainly due to the decrease in sales of these models in the German market (-44.8%) after the end of benefits.

This growth was mainly supported by the results of the four main markets of the European Union: Spain (+31.8%), France (+24.6%), Germany (+24.2%) and Italy (+23.9%). February 2023 the number of registrations of petrol models is also growing. With +11.1%, they reached a market share in the European Union of 36.9%, which is the same as recorded in 2022. Spain (+19.0%), Italy (+16.3%), Germany (+8.9%) and France (+7.7%) all contributed to this growth.

Instead, continue there decline in the diesel car market in the EU (-8.4%), despite growth in some Central European markets such as Poland (+18.9%) and the Czech Republic (+12.4%), as well as in Italy (+2.2%) . The share of diesel models in the EU market as of February 2023 is 15%.
