Georgia Meloni, the battle for biofuels is not lost March 25, 2023 119

European Union it continues discuss with Germany to break the political deadlock created by the EU Council vote to end endothermy in 2035. The German government, as we know, is pushing for a move away from e-fuel, and it seems that an agreement with the European Union could be a matter of days. Italy is also committed to advancing the issue of technological neutrality, while seeking, however, also on biofuels.

However, there appears to be no readiness on the part of the European Union to open up to this technology. In any case, at the end of the recent European Council Prime Minister Georgia Meloni doesn’t seem to want to give up.

The game on biofuels is by no means lost; meanwhile, the game of technological neutrality, which is a condition for the recognition of biofuels, has been won.

VICTORY OF TECHNOLOGICAL NEUTRALITY

For Georgia Meloni, the work that is done for recognition of technological neutrality can already be considered a victory. In addition, Germany is close to reaching an agreement with the European Union on e-fuel. However, the Italian target will be much more difficult to achieve, as the inclusion of biofuels would result in the EU the need to rewrite most of the regulations related to the goals for the period up to 2035. On this occasion, the Vice-President of the EU Commission, Frans Timmermanspreviously it was very clear, emphasizing that the current negotiations are taking place exclusively within the framework of the regulatory framework, which already provided for the transition to e-fuel.

But Italy’s prime minister doesn’t seem to want to give up the opportunity to give more space to biofuels.

It seems to me that the principle is this: without prejudice to the targets that we are ready to hit, what technologies to use should not be a dogma that must be imposed. We are demonstrating how biofuels achieve zero emissions, and therefore it is not necessary to state it technically, because the technology meets these goals and can be used. From this point of view, I think things are going well, they are the subject of discussion and study.

It remains only to wait to understand how the negotiations within the European Union will develop. If the agreement with Germany is really a matter of days, then it will indeed be clear whether there will be room for further changes or whether we will go directly to a vote in the Council of the EU.
