The drone can reach speeds of up to 10 knots thanks to a modern electric motor and aerodynamic shape.
The Italian company Marconi Industrial Services introduced the U-IV unmanned underwater vehicle at the global DEFEA 2023 exhibition in Athens. Edition Navy Recognition shared the interesting details of the project.
The U-IV looks like a large black torpedo about 4 feet long – this shape will allow ships and submarines to “shoot” drones from 21-inch launchers. Sealed interior compartments and a streamlined body are the main advantages of the drone and give it good performance.
Underwater aircraft equipped with an electric motor and propeller for fast swimming, maximum speed 8-10 knots (18.5 km/h), cruise 4-6 knots (11 km/h). For control and maneuvering, the elements located in the bow and stern of the apparatus are responsible: two “wings”, a stabilizer of the transverse configuration and a steering wheel. Together they change the direction of motion and stabilize the position in the water to resist external forces.
According to the developers, the new drones are suitable for a variety of military missions underwater, including reconnaissance, surveillance and detection of underwater threats. They can be easily transported and deployed in a variety of environments, and the modular design allows you to change equipment and customize the platform for specific tasks.
Previously, the domestic underwater drone Toloka TLK-150 was developed in Ukraine. The 2.5 m long device received triple engines, stabilizers and a massive spine, which should give it greater maneuverability, and the camera on the “periscope” became the main distinguishing feature.
