The Verge reports that the FBI has warned of a new type of fraud that is a result of the proliferation of artificial intelligence tools, allowing cybercriminals to create realistic deep frauds. The blackmail scheme is simple: scammers look for a victim with money on social networks or dating sites. This is often immediately noticeable in the environment and in the profession. Then they take pictures of the victim from social networks that people post on their own and produce deep fake photos and videos with a sexual orientation. After that, the victim is forced to pay a ransom, otherwise they threaten to send fabricated compromising evidence to relatives, friends and co-workers or post it online along with the victim’s personal data. Oftentimes, criminals also set a payment deadline and raise the ransom as the deadline approaches.
Such crimes are called “extorshen,” and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation claims that more than 1,000 such blackmail cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year, with the total amount of compensation received by criminals exceeding $10 million. • Both men and women of different ages and social groups are victims.
The FBI advises victims of sextorshen not to pay the required amount and contact law enforcement immediately.
