AI can counter phone scammers: Apate chatbot will cause an irregular malfunction

It turns out that phone scammers are not only trying to “deceive” Ukrainians, but also many people abroad suffer from them.

Cybersecurity experts at Macquarie University (Sydney) have invented a multilingual chatbot designed to keep scammers on the line, according to the university’s official website. The purpose of the chatbot is to keep the scammer on the phone as long as possible with the help of the chatter, so that he has less and less time for malicious attempts with other subscribers.

According to statistics, people around the world lose about $55 billion from phone scams, and that’s why scientists have created many fake identities to chat with criminals. Named after the Greek goddess of deception, Apate, the system will deceive scammers and give them less time to look for real vulnerable victims. The number of scam calls is constantly increasing because criminals use Internet telephony, which allows them to hide their location.

In creating a chatbot, the team of scientists started by analyzing fake calls and identifying social engineering methods used by criminals, thus laying the groundwork for conversational scenarios. Next, they trained chatbots on a dataset of real scam conversations, from scam call recordings to scam email transcripts, so the bot could generate its own conversations that looked like real scam calls.

Artificial intelligence cloning of the human voice has allowed researchers to develop so-called “AI agents” that can speak fluently, take a specific look, and stay on top of the conversation while being convincingly consistent in their responses.

These robots can be trained in any language or accent, and since phone fraud is a global problem, this technology can be used anywhere in the world.

Today, the Apate chatbot can keep a cheater on the line for five minutes, but scientists want this result to be at least 40 minutes.

Researchers say they are already negotiating with telecom operators in Australia so that everyone can use their chatbots.
