Hackers will hack the Pentagon’s military satellite and get a reward for it: the known

The army held a special competition – the one who catches the apparatus in orbit will win.

According to PCWorld, the US military is hosting a Hack-A-Sat 4 competition that will take place during Defcon’s annual hacker convention in August. The goal of the contestants is to capture a US military satellite in Earth orbit with the help of hacker tools and skills.

Curiously, this is the final of the international hacker competition where the best and most talented representatives of hacker teams from the USA, Australia, Italy, Poland and Germany participate. Initially, more than 380 teams from all over the world participated in the selection and registered. If all goes according to plan, the hackers will fight to take over a military satellite in Las Vegas during the Defcon conference. The participants are so-called “white hat hackers” who engage in ethical hacking by attacking systems on behalf of their owners to expose various security flaws so developers can fix vulnerabilities from real malicious attacks.

The competition is organized by the US Air Force Research Laboratory. In previous cases, the target was a satellite that remained on Earth, but this year competitors will target an orbiting satellite.

The spacecraft targeted by the hackers is called the Moonlighter and is designed to be immune to hacker attacks. The satellite is the size of a toaster and has several security features. For example, it is not equipped with its own engines. Controllers will also be able to reboot the satellite system and, if necessary, repel intruders.
