Greta Thunberg’s “Extrapolations”: What is the new sci-fi series about climate protection and eco-terrorism about?

Drought, heat, fog, oxygen for sale. Apple TV has released a fantastic series of “Extrapolations” that showcases what the planet will be like in 33 years with a dozen star players. Focus He understood what was good and what was bad in the series, which was shot in climate fiction, a fashionable type of climate protection.

The cast of “Extrapolation” is a solid TOP: Kit Harington, Meryl Streep, Marion Cotillard, Sienna Miller, Edward Norton, Tobey Maguire, Forest Whitaker, Eiza Gonzalez, Indira Varma, Judd Hersh. It would seem – what could go wrong? But IMDb: 6.1 and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 45% to 57% say audiences aren’t thrilled.

This is easily explained – the writers did not make an action thriller, but a problematic tape – he needs to think. You should argue with him. Consider your options. This movie is not for popcorn.

No, of course they give us some funny data about the future: Texas left the USA in 2047, humanity landed on Mars, the African elephant in 2040, and the polar bears extinct in 2043. serious reasoning, which I will divide into three main parts.

  • The first is climate in its purest form.: heat, drought, pollution – everything Greta and her followers talk about from “The Last Generation” that spills paint on pictures. So far – only paint and only pictures.
  • The second is eco-terrorism. It’s about what kind of reaction the activists see as sufficient if it doesn’t work out peacefully anyway. What will be used in The Last Generation when you realize that coal mining cannot be stopped with a broken painting?
  • Third, it is economical. It is already a trend to discuss what can replace money in the event of an environmental disaster. You won’t like the answer given in extrapolations. So – briefly about every aspect in the series

Climate: global warming cannot be stopped

Each “Extrapolations” series begins with an indication of the level of warming on Earth. In the first series, 2037, the temperature has risen by 1.55 degrees Celsius since 2020. According to the last series, the growth by 2070 was +2.59 degrees.

Everything is sad. There is no water in Tel Aviv, the world’s largest glacier is melting in Greenland. Animals die, fires, fog. As we approach 2068, no longer chicken patties but servings of oxygen are being sold on the streets of Mumbai. Almost all of the food is algae. Foie gras for the elite – from cloned geese.

“Extrapolations” gives to the end to feel the death of the habitual habitat. Guess, so to speak.

But there are also people who successfully earn from climate disruption. For example, a businessman rushing to Greenland to build an expensive hotel on the site of a melted glacier. Businessmen are arguably portrayed in the wrong direction, as the entire ideology of climate protection is still essentially socialist and revolutionary. These evil capitalists will be prosecuted and punished until the end of the series. Kit Harington’s character is particularly unlucky.

Ecoterrorism: sabotage as blackmail on hydrocarbon business

But because it is very difficult to punish a businessman according to the law. Or force them to quit their job, for example, coal mining, then often illegal funds are used, but, as they say, politically necessary.

The “Ministry of the Future” novel, sponsored by Bill Gates, described how in the near future eco-terrorists will blow up planes and poison cows in order to eliminate the use of hydrocarbons as fuel. Cows not to fart.

In “Extrapolations,” a wealthy climate advocate puts a condition to the President of the United States – either decisions will be made to stop emissions or he will dump massive amounts of calcium carbonate from his planes. On the one hand, particles floating in the atmosphere can really limit the amount of sunlight reaching the planet. And lower the temperature. After the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, there was a massive emission of ash that lowered the average temperature on Earth by 0.5 degrees. So theory has a right to live.

But on the other hand, the release of calcium carbonate can completely destroy agriculture on the planet due to the inability to follow the planting – harvesting cycles. Which will happen and lead to mass starvation.

The Economy of the Apocalypse: Salary in hydrocarbon quotas

In the general architecture of the apocalyptic future drawn by climate fiction writers, much attention is paid to the financial system of the future. In the previously mentioned novel “Ministry of the Future” – the carbon coin is introduced – an electronic currency tied to the mass of carbon emissions.

In “Extrapolations” the idea is much simpler. All over the world, wages will be paid in the form of carbon credits. In other words, you can use it for money that will not exceed your carbon footprint. Spend quota for light in the apartment, travel by car or public transport, or not at all if you go on foot. I ate steak – subtract the damage done by keeping a cow. Sometimes you will choose – a steak or a ride.

This will cross a small line in the upcoming drama. But that’s the part that makes you think.

After all, a funny series about the digitization of the brain (coming in 1968) in which a husband and wife, their wife’s lover, and a waitress play a comedy sounds easy, but haven’t we seen enough of that already?

Total – “Extrapolations” – a rather complex series. Worth a watch if you’re seriously interested in climate and future issues, or if you want to understand them on a level above popular culture.

Take another look at what the world will look like, can be read in the review of the novel “Ministry of the Future”. The book was recommended to be read by Bill Gates and Barack Obama, and the terrorists and threats here are much worse than Extrapolations.
