Dacia Sandero beats Tesla Model Y in photo finish and becomesbest selling car in Europe in May 2023. With 21,745 units registered, the Dacia surpassed the American electric SUV, which reached 21,530 registrations. Let’s take a closer look at the trends in the European car market last month.
According to Jato Dynamics, in the Old Continent In May 2023, 1,116,472 vehicles were registered.against 943,435 in the same month last year. This is an increase of 18%. In the first 5 months of the year, 5.3 million vehicles were registered, representing an increase of 17%. Second Felipe Munoz, an analyst at Jato Dynamics, electric vehicles and SUVs are leading the recovery in the sector. However, growth across all segments was not enough to bring total volume back to pre-pandemic levels.
In fact, in 2019, there were 6.93 million registrations in the first 5 months of the year.
The Jato Dynamics report highlights that in May EV registrations up 65%. We are talking about 169,091 units, which is 15% of all new registrations. In this market segment, Tesla’s share is 17.4% compared to 12.2% for the same period in 2022. Tesla is also the manufacturer with the best growth performance of any brand this month. In fact, with nearly 29,400 registered units, Elon Musk’s company has achieved 2.63% of the European marketcompared to a share of just 0.15% for the same period in 2022.
According to Felipe Munoz, Tesla’s growth is driven by 3 factors: incentives, good market positioning, and constant price cuts. Tornado in the electric segment, in first place among the best-selling models, we obviously find the Tesla Model Y, the second best-selling model in Europe in May.
Very detached, in second place we find the Volkswagen ID.4. Third step of the podium for MG4. Fourth place went to the Tesla Model 3 and fifth place to the electric FIAT 500.
As mentioned at the beginning, the Dacia Sandero outperformed everyone in May 2023 thanks to strong sales in key markets such as France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
