The army “passed” robots and armored vehicles: how new technology will strengthen the army

Engineers demonstrated MUM-T technology that helped them coordinate together on the battlefield.

Army Recognition announced the successful testing of BAE Systems’ Manned-Unmanned Team Building (MUM-T) technology, which combines armored vehicles with robotic drones. For the experiment, amphibious vehicles (ACV) C4UAS with the wheel formula 8×8 were used, which were “connected” to the Rex MK II complex of the Israeli company IAI / ELTA Systems Ltd.

What is MUM-T?

This is an advanced technology that allows manned and unmanned vehicles to interact effectively. It is expected to provide significant benefits to the troops in task coordination, decision making and risk reduction. By integrating MUM-T into mission planning, it is possible to expand operational parameters, provide better situational awareness and increase the ability to respond to uncertain and hostile conditions, and ultimately increase the chances of combat mission success.

The purpose of the demonstration was to demonstrate the possibilities of coordination between manned and unmanned vehicles in order to increase the efficiency of operations and reduce risks for the military.

On which technique was the system tested?

The experiment is based on the Rex MK II autonomous system, which provides direct support to infantry units. Equipped with versatility, this unmanned autonomous vehicle can perform many important tasks. It provides tactical logistical support, tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and can perform target identification and casualty evacuation.

The Rex MK II has a “follow me” drive mode adapted for infantry and can carry loads of up to 1.25 tons. The armored vehicle can travel more than 300 kilometers (about 70 kilometers from electronic warfare systems in stealth mode) thanks to its hybrid electrical installation. In addition, the machine can be remotely controlled beyond the line of sight and, if necessary, transferred to fully automatic mode. Also, the Rex MK II is not very large and therefore can be delivered directly to the battlefield by helicopter.

Another armored vehicle in the experiment was the ACV C4UAS. It is an 8×8 armored amphibious vehicle with robust protection, mobility and integrated systems that make it a valuable asset for military operations, providing increased survivability, versatility and successful missions both on land and in water. Developed in collaboration with Iveco Defense Vehicles, this adaptive amphibious platform combines command, control, communication and computing capabilities with unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

What the experiment shows

Engineers say the successful demonstration of the capabilities of the MUM-T testifies to the versatility and expandability of the amphibious ACV C4UAS. Thanks to the simultaneous joint control of several combat vehicles, army units gain an advantage over the enemy: better control on the battlefield, faster decision-making and protection of personnel.

BAE Systems states that the long-term cooperation with Iveco Defense Vehicles in the development of the Rex MK II, ACV C4UAS and the integration of MUM-T technology is a major step forward in changing strategy in military operations.
